Description:
We have been developing a cultural art loop using a hybrid electric vehicle for the last six years. The original purpose was to develop just one route to bring tourists and visitors to Harlem. But as the organization studied other neighborhood routes, we saw the many challenges that prevented these similar endeavors from succeeding. The first was cost, continuity, marketing and logistics. We realized that a good strategy would be to link a Harlem route with other artist communities in the City that also have galleries and artist studios. By linking these communities together, marketing could be leveraged with room for cross promotion. We selected the communities of Greater Long Island City, DUMBO, Williamsburg and West Harlem for loop service. In addition to having a sizeable number of artists living and/or working in their communities, these neighborhoods used to be active manufacturing neighborhoods with some Dutch colonial history. A Brooklyn based bus operator was then secured to offer a fixed cost that includes a driver and a reliable schedule – continuity.
